Tata Motors’ upcoming Tata Sierra has officially entered the India Book of Records, achieving the highest fuel-efficiency figure ever recorded in a 12-hour endurance run. The SUV, equipped with Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre Hyperion turbo-petrol engine, delivered an impressive 29.9 kmpl during a certified test at the NATRAX proving ground in Indore.

This remarkable performance surpasses the previous national benchmark and reinforces Tata’s growing dominance in fuel-efficient powertrains.

12-Hour Endurance Drive Conducted Under Strict Supervision

The record attempt took place on 30 November 2025, where the Pixel Motion team operated the vehicle continuously from 7 AM to 7 PM, pausing only for brief and scheduled driver changes. The run was monitored and validated by officials on the same day.

Tata’s Hyperion engine—designed with an efficiency-first philosophy—played a key role in the achievement. The brand claims the motor’s refined combustion process, broad torque band and lower internal friction enabled the Sierra to maintain consistent mileage throughout the full 12-hour cycle.

Real-World Performance Review Already Released

For a deeper understanding of the Sierra’s new powertrain, a 700 km real-world mileage test and detailed drive review has already been published on the company’s official YouTube channel, offering further insight into how the engine behaves outside controlled conditions.

Sierra Also Touches 222 kmph in Controlled Top-Speed Run

In a separate performance test conducted at NATRAX, the new Tata Sierra demonstrated its high-speed capabilities by reaching 222 kmph under tightly regulated conditions. This highlights the strong performance potential of the Hyperion power unit.

However, Tata Motors confirmed that customer models will be electronically capped at 190 kmph, ensuring compliance with the company’s safety protocols.

The automaker also issued a public advisory reminding owners that such tests are performed by trained professionals and should not be replicated on public roads.

Multiple Engine Options and High Safety Rating

The upcoming midsize SUV will not be limited to the turbo-petrol motor. Tata will also offer:

  • 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine
  • 1.5-litre diesel engine
  • Transmission options:
    • 6-speed manual
    • 6-speed torque-converter automatic
    • 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT)

Built on Tata’s modular ARGOS platform, the new Sierra has also secured a 5-star rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests, further strengthening its appeal in the competitive SUV segment.
