In a surprising move, U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to delay the introduction of a steep 50% tariff on European Union imports. Originally planned to take effect on June 1, the tariff will now be held off until July 9 to allow for renewed trade negotiations.

Trump described the extension as a “privilege,” signaling a more conciliatory tone following his earlier remarks that had criticized the EU’s trade practices.

Trump, EU Commission President Open Door for Talks

The decision followed a phone conversation between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. According to Trump, von der Leyen expressed readiness for meaningful discussions, which prompted the U.S. to push the tariff date forward.

“She said she’s ready for serious negotiations,” Trump told reporters. “I agreed to give it more time.”

Recent Tensions Over EU Trade Approach

Just days before the announcement, Trump had accused the EU of being uncooperative on trade matters. In a social media post, he criticized the bloc for being “hard to work with” and stated that previous efforts at negotiation had made little progress.

The now-delayed tariffs were initially meant to pressure the EU into revising what Trump has long described as unfair trade policies.

EU Responds Positively to Extension

Responding to the development, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of the U.S.-EU trade relationship. She noted that both sides have shared interests and confirmed that the EU is prepared to move forward swiftly in discussions.

“A fair agreement will require some time, and we welcome the extension until July 9,” she stated.
