Toyota is preparing to launch a brand-new compact SUV, rumored to be called the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, which will be positioned below the popular Fortuner in the lineup. Internally codenamed “Toyota 500D”, the model is set to debut at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, opening on October 29.

Traditional Off-Road Build for a Modern Audience

In response to growing interest in rugged, body-on-frame SUVs and the slowed momentum of all-electric adoption, Toyota is investing in a new global SUV built on the IMV 0 ladder-frame platform. The upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is designed to attract younger customers looking for capable 4×4 vehicles.

Expected dimensions include a length of 4,410 mm, width of 1,855 mm, and height of 1,870 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,580 mm. Though it may not match the Corolla Cross in interior space, it will outperform it in off-road capabilities with impressive stats like a 700 mm wading depth and 33º/26º/23º approach, breakover, and departure angles.

Bold Styling Inspired by Classic and Concept SUVs

The exterior design of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is expected to draw inspiration from both the Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept and the Land Cruiser 250 (Prado). A standout feature could be its thick C-pillar, reminiscent of the older FJ Cruiser, which may divide opinions.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Engine Options Tailored for Global Markets

In markets such as Japan and Southeast Asia, the SUV is rumored to come with two engine choices: the 2.7L 2TR-FE petrol engine and the 2.8L 1GD-FTV diesel engine. Transmission options could include 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

High-end variants are expected to feature a full-time 4WD system with a 40:60 front-rear torque split, a centre-locking differential, and a Torsen limited-slip rear differential, all aimed at enhancing off-road performance.

U.S. and India Market Plans

Reports suggest that Toyota plans to bring the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to Western markets, including the United States, where it could be offered with a petrol hybrid powertrain instead of a diesel option. Production is likely to take place at Toyota’s Ban Pho plant in Thailand.

For the Indian market, speculation hints that Toyota Kirloskar Motor may introduce an SUV positioned below the Fortuner, to be built at a new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. However, early reports suggest this India-bound model might be based on a monocoque platform, which could mean the global Toyota Land Cruiser FJ won’t be offered in India.
